Waste reduction - actions for individuals

no cost/easy actions

  • Buy products that have less packaging or more recyclable packaging
  • If using a large wheelie bin, swap for a smaller bin or change collections to once a fortnight rather than once a week
  • Use your own bag or container when shopping – do not accept plastic bags
  • Re-use by buying second-hand gifts and goods
  • Join the BYOC (Bring Your Own Container) campaign by taking your own cups, plates, cutlery etc to events
  • Put a ‘No Junk Mail’ sticker on your letterbox – available from your local Council
  • Drink tap water rather than buying bottled water
  • Use kerbside recycling services in Nelson and in Tasman
  • Make waste free lunches & picnics
  • Print double-sided & only print documents that are necessary
  • Attend a free Council run Create Your Own Eden workshop on composting

  • Recycle your kitchen food scraps by composting, worm farming or using a bokashi system
  • Get together with your neighbours to chip fresh prunings & branches to make garden mulch
  • Recycle all printer & toner cartridges, & batteries
  • Use re-usable nappies
  • Buy quality products and gifts that are eco-friendly, durable and recyclable
  • Select non-bleached paper from sustainable forests
  • Take garden waste to Council’s green waste hopper at your local Transfer Station

  • Sell or pass on any electronic equipment that can be reused by others rather than taking it to landfill
  • Aim to be a zero-waste household
  • Minimise the use of chemicals for cleaning & replace with cleaner, greener products that won’t damage waterway
  • Preserve & store excess vegetables & fruit
