Alternative transport - actions for individuals

no cost/easy actions

  • Drive efficiently
  • Drive at lower speeds (90kms/hr uses 25% less fuel than 110kms/hr)
  • Keep vehicles tuned & tyres at the correct pressure
  • Remove unnecessary weight like roof boxes, bike racks & golf clubs from the car
  • Use car air conditioning less – this can add 10% to your fuel bill!
  • Make one day a week car free and walk, cycle or use public transport instead
  • Share some of your car journeys with others
  • Think smart & do all your local journeys in one go – a cold engine uses more fuel
  • Plan trips to avoid peak traffic & congestion
  • Encourage children to walk to school or join a walking school bus

some cost/medium effort actions

  • Have your car regularly serviced
  • Replace some petrol with biofuel produced sustainably
  • Cycle, walk or take the bus at least three times per week

  • Combine all shopping into one weekly car trip
  • Replace one domestic flight with a bus, train or shared car journey
  • Choose to offset flights when possible
  • Investigate teleworking with your employer

more cost/more effort actions
